Key Takeaways
If you live in the United States, Air Canada is a complicated alternative to United Airlines, though better value can be found.
- Similar to United, you can access Star Alliance international flights through Air Canada, but sometimes at lowerr point totals
- You cannot book flights between two U.S. cities
- Air Canada can be useful for international flights that naturally route through Canada.
- Aeroplan allows up to two stopovers per flight for 5,000 points each

As with most airline loyalty programs, the quickest way to earn Aeroplan points is to fly on Air Canada (or one of its many partner airlines) or to open a co-branded credit card. Note that how you earn points (and status) from flying will change in January 2026, when the program moves to a revenue-based system.

Earn by opening a co-branded credit card
Air Canada offers one co-branded credit card to U.S. customers, the Chase Aeroplan card. It has a solid signup bonus and useful benefits. If you fly Air Canada even once per year, the perks should outweigh the $95 annual fee.
Earn by opening cards that transfer miles to Air Canada
Air Canada partners with four transferable points programs — American Express, Chase, Bilt, and Capital One. This makes it easy to top up your balance or book flights with Air Canada or one of its many partners.
Flying with Partners (alliance and non-alliance partners)
Air Canada belongs to Star Alliance and also has a variety of non–Star Alliance partners. You can earn Aeroplan points when flying these partners, but how much you earn differs by airline and fare class. Check out all their partners here to see how many points you’ll earn with each one.

Annual Bonuses & Big Spend Bonuses
There are several spend-related bonuses on this card, but we don’t recommend putting extra spend on the card solely to earn them. If you earn them through organic spending, that’s fine, but you shouldn’t aim for them intentionally.
-
Spend requirement: Receive 500 bonus points for every $2000 spent in a calendar month.
Our take: A small bonus that isn’t worth shifting spend from more valuable cards. -
Spend requirement: Keep your Aeroplan 25K Status with $15,000 spent in a calendar year (you automatically receive this the first year you hold the card and the following calendar year).
Our take: Useful if you naturally hit the requirement, but we wouldn’t chase it. -
Spend requirement: Earn an Elite Status Level Up to 35K Status or higher by spending $50,000 in a calendar year (this will change after January 1, 2026).
Our take: A very high spend threshold. We don’t recommend pursuing this strictly for the status boost.

How to Redeem Miles
Air Canada has around 50 airline partners, so redeeming your miles for a flight is your best option. Searching is simple on Air Canada’s website or app. Click “Book with Aeroplan points” when searching to see what’s available. You can view results by the week and easily sort by airline. Nearly all partners are included in the award search, which makes the process straightforward.
Air Canada has award charts, kind of. It uses a blend of traditional, distance-based charts with some dynamic pricing, so it’s not fully fixed. The prices shown are “starting at” amounts, and there is usually a range depending on the zones you’re flying between. You can view the award charts here.
Utilize Stopovers
One of the best ways to maximize Aeroplan points is to use their stopover program. A stopover is a layover of more than 24 hours, and with Aeroplan you can stay between 24 hours and up to 45 days.
- For any international award booking, you can add a stopover for just 5000 points.
- Stopovers are only available outside the US and Canada.
- You can add stopovers to one-way, round-trip, and multi-city itineraries.
- You are allowed one stopover per direction of travel.
You can book stopovers online by selecting the “Multi-city/Stopover” option when searching for flights:
- Enter your departing and arriving cities.
- Click “Add stopover for flight 1” to choose your stopover city and how many days you’ll stay.
- Repeat the process for your return flight, if desired.
- If the itinerary gets too complex, you can also call Aeroplan to book by phone.
Stopover example
- Round trip from Los Angeles to Bangkok normally costs 120,000 miles in economy.
- Add a stopover in Taipei on the way there and stay 1–45 days.
- Add a stopover in Seoul on the way back and stay 1–45 days.
- Total trip cost: 130,000 miles (an extra 5000 points for each stopover).
In many cases you’d have a layover in one of these cities anyway, so extending the stay can break up long flights and add extra destinations for a low cost. With smart planning, you can even build a round-the-world style trip by adding stopovers between segments for only 5000 points each time.
Hotel stays, car rentals, vacation packages, and other
You can redeem Aeroplan points for hotel stays, car rentals, and vacation packages, but none of these options will offer anywhere near the value you’ll get from redeeming for flights. Aeroplan also has a shopping portal where you can redeem points, but that is also a poor use of your points.Sweet Spots Finder
