Key Takeaways

Delta is a good point system for both domestic and international flights.

  • Delta offers many cards, making initial collection relatively easy. But the Amex 1/7 Rule limits that ability over time.
  • Delta is part of the Amex partner reward system and is a decent transfer value.
  • We save Delta points for specific flights, perhaps direct domestic or best value international.
  • We use easier-to-collect point systems such as Southwest and American ahead of Delta.

How to Earn Miles

As with most popular airline rewards programs, there are a variety of ways to earn miles with Delta. The two methods that allow you to collect the most miles are flying with Delta or a partner, and opening co-branded credit cards (or American Express cards that earn transferable miles).

Earn by Flying Delta

Anyone who is a Delta SkyMiles member earns 5 miles per dollar on Classic or Refundable fares and 7 miles per dollar on Extra fares. Elite members earn more based on status:

  • Silver: 7 miles per dollar
  • Gold: 8 miles per dollar
  • Platinum: 9 miles per dollar
  • Diamond: 11 miles per dollar

Exceptions

Some flights don’t earn the standard number of miles. These include “exception fares,” which are flights booked as part of vacation packages, cruise packages, or consolidator fares (not Delta Vacations). In these cases, you earn a percentage of miles flown. You can find the exact earning rates here.

Earn by Opening Co-Branded Credit Cards

Delta partners withAmerican Express to offer seven co-branded credit cards that earn Delta SkyMiles. There are four personal cards and three business cards, each with different annual fees, signup bonuses, benefits, and perks. You can see our recommended cards and all available cards below.

Earn by Opening American Express Cards

American Express is the only major credit card issuer that has Delta as a transfer partner. Any Membership Rewards you earn can be transferred to Delta to top off an award or book a flight outright. While Delta isn’t always the best transfer partner for Amex, situations do arise where transferring makes sense. Keep in mind that not all Amex cards earn transferable Membership Rewards.

Flying with Partners (alliance and non-alliance partners)

Delta has a breadth of airline partners you can earn miles with. Partner earning does not work the same way as on Delta-operated flights. You’ll earn miles based on distance flown. Find out how much you can earn here.

Annual Bonuses & Big Spend Bonuses

Delta SkyMiles Gold Card

  • Spend requirement: Earn a $200 Delta Flight Credit after spending $10,000 on your card in a calendar year.
  • Our take: We wouldn’t put extra spend on the card solely to earn this bonus.

Delta SkyMiles Platinum Card

  • Annual bonus: Receive a Companion Certificate for a Delta Main domestic, Caribbean, or Central America round-trip flight after renewing your card each year.
  • Our take: This is a solid added benefit. Make sure to include it when deciding if it helps offset the $350 annual fee.

Delta SkyMiles Reserve Card

  • Spend requirement: Unlock unlimited Delta Sky Club access after spending $75,000 on the card in a calendar year.
  • Our take: You already receive 15 visits with this card, so spending that much just for unlimited visits is not a good use of spend.

Delta SkyMiles Gold Business Card

  • Spend requirement: Earn a $200 Delta Flight Credit after spending $10,000 on your card in a calendar year.
  • Our take: As with the personal version, we wouldn’t put extra spend on the card just to earn this bonus.

Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business Card

  • Annual bonus: Receive a Companion Certificate for a Delta Main domestic, Caribbean, or Central America round-trip flight after renewing each year.
  • Our take: Like the personal version, this is a strong benefit. Make sure it meaningfully offsets the $350 annual fee when weighing renewal.

Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business Card

  • Annual bonus: Receive a Companion Certificate for a First Class, Delta Comfort+, or Main Cabin round-trip flight within the U.S., Mexico, the Caribbean, or Central America.
  • Our take: A valuable benefit, especially at this card’s $650 annual fee. Be sure it meaningfully offsets the cost when deciding whether to renew.
  • Spend requirement: Unlock unlimited Sky Club access after spending $75,000 in a calendar year.
  • Our take: As with the personal Reserve, the card already includes 15 visits. We don’t recommend putting that much spend on the card just to earn unlimited access.

Other Options to Earn

None of the following are methods we’d typically recommend. You can add to your SkyMiles balance with them, but they aren’t approaches we’d prioritize.

  • Delta Vacations, Stays, Car Rentals, and Cruises: You can earn extra miles by booking travel through Delta’s portal, but you can usually find better prices elsewhere. If you find something that works for your trip, feel free to book it, but we wouldn’t rely on this as a main points-earning strategy.
  • Airbnb: You can earn miles at about a 1 cent per point ratio when booking an Airbnb through Delta’s dedicated link.
  • Hertz: You can earn SkyMiles on Hertz rentals, with higher earnings for higher SkyMiles status levels.
  • SkyMiles Shopping: Delta’s online shopping portal allows you to earn miles, but this is not a high-value way to collect points or find good shopping deals.

Breaking Points

How to Redeem Miles

Redeem for Airfare

Booking flights with Delta or one of its partners is the best way to redeem Delta miles. Log in to your SkyMiles account, click Shop with Miles, enter your travel details, and search. If your dates are flexible, check the box to view results by week, then switch to the price calendar to see fares over a five-week window. Prices shown in green are saver fares — the lowest prices available and the ones required for partner bookings.

  • Delta uses dynamic pricing, which means award rates fluctuate and traditional charts no longer apply.
  • Saver-level partner awards still exist, both for Delta-operated flights and partner airlines.
  • When booking a partner award, you must find saver-level space (green pricing). Some partner bookings require calling Delta.

Hotel Stays, Car Rentals, and Vacations

Delta offers a portal for booking hotels, rental cars, and vacation packages. These redemptions return about 1 cent per mile, which is far lower than what you get with airfare. We don’t recommend using SkyMiles this way unless you have a small balance you need to burn.

The Highlights

  • Delta is part of the Amex partner reward system and is a decent transfer value.
  • We save Delta points for specific flights, perhaps direct domestic or best value international.
  • We use easier-to-collect point systems such as Southwest and American ahead of Delta.

What to Know About This Point System

  • Delta SkyMiles are super easy to accumulate with American Express cards, whether they're specific for earning SkyMiles or American Express cards that have completely transferable and instant 1:1 ratio Amex points.

Redeeming SkyMiles isn’t difficult, but you might find that their value isn't as high as you'd think -- especially if you do a side-by-side comparison with our personal favorite, United. Delta’s redeeming quality, however, is the fact that they fly to over 325 locations. So sometimes when you want to go somewhere that United doesn't, you’ll find Delta’s got your back.

When Delta removed its online reward charts in 2015, no one was happy. Now, the more flexible you are, the more value you can squeeze out of your Miles -- especially when Delta runs one of its regular award sales that offer some deep discounts in economy and Delta One.

But the real ace up the sleeve here is booking international Business or First Class using alliances like China Eastern or one of their non-alliance partners like Virgin Atlantic. This can be done for fewer points than if you booked directly through the Delta website -- as long as the flight is operated by Delta, Delta Connections or Virgin Atlantic. Searching around for Delta’s flash sales based on region or utilizing one of their partners can get you a pretty impressive trip.

Status Levels Explained

Delta has four elite tiers, and Medallion members receive different benefits, perks, and mileage bonuses based on their level.

To reach each tier, you need to earn MQDs (Medallion Qualifying Dollars). MQDs are earned by purchasing flights on Delta or a partner. As with earning miles on tickets, you earn MQDs differently depending on the type of ticket you book.

How to Earn Delta Elite Status

There are a variety of ways to earn status with Delta:

  • Earn 1 MQD per dollar spent on the base fare of a Delta-marketed flight.
  • Exception Fares earn differently. These include vacation packages, cruise packages, and consolidator fares. Find out how much you earn on Exception Fares here.
  • Earn MQDs on partners much like you earn miles on partners. You earn a percentage based on distance flown and the class of service you book. Find out how much you’ll earn with each partner airline here.
  • Earn MQDs through Delta co-branded credit card spending. For example, the Delta SkyMiles Reserve card earns 1 MQD per $10 spent and offers a 2,500 MQD bonus each year you hold the card, giving you a head start.
  • Status Match Challenge: If you have elite status with another airline, you may qualify for Delta’s challenge. You receive equivalent Delta status for 90 days and can extend it by completing the MQD requirements. Find out more here.
  • Reclaiming Status: If you lost status because of a major life event (becoming a parent, changing jobs, medical issues, etc.), you can request a temporary reinstatement. If accepted, you receive status for three months. Complete the MQD requirements during that time to have your status fully reinstated. Find out more about Reclaiming Status here.

What to Know Before Canceling

Delta miles never expire, so even if you stop flying Delta or using a co-branded credit card, your miles will stay in your SkyMiles account. One thing to keep in mind is that all Delta cards are issued by American Express, and Amex’s 1/7 Rule states you can only earn a welcome offer on the same card once every seven years. This means you shouldn’t close a Delta card with the expectation of reopening it soon to earn another bonus.

The good news is that Delta has seven co-branded cards and American Express offers several Membership Rewards cards, so you still have plenty of options to replenish your miles over time.
