Key Takeaways
IHG is our “utility” hotel points system. If you just need a night or two, and aren’t looking for glitz and glamor, IHG points go a long way.
- The IHG brand consists mostly of Holiday Inns, which are in nearly every small town or international city you might want to stay. We use it as the Hyatt’s “not there” filler.
- There are also several luxury hotels part of IHG’s umbrella, and while redemptions can be high, there is plenty of variety in IHG properties
- The generous sign-up bonuses (especially if you wait for a special offer) will cover 6-8 nights per card.
- IHG is part of the Chase partner rewards system, but IHG redemptions can be very high, so this isn't usually a great transfer option except for topping off.

How to Earn Points
The best way to earn IHG One Rewards is through paid stays at one of their properties. If you book an IHG property through an online travel agency like Expedia or Booking.com, you will not earn IHG points. There are also three co-branded credit cards to earn points for stays at IHG properties. Chase and Bilt are also IHG transfer partners, so you can use points from either of those systems to top up or book stays.
Earn by staying at IHG Properties
IHG, or the InterContinental Hotels Group, includes many different properties. From mid-tier hotels like Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza, to extended stay options like Candlewood and Staybridge Suites, to luxury hotels like InterContinental, Kimpton, and Six Senses, there are a variety of properties to earn IHG One Rewards.
- You will earn 10 IHG Rewards points per dollar spent at most brands.
- You will earn 5 points per dollar at Candlewood and Staybridge Suites.
- You only earn points on paid stays booked directly through IHG.
If you have elite status with IHG, you will receive a bonus on points earned through stays:
- Silver Elite: 20% bonus
- Gold Elite: 40% bonus
- Platinum Elite: 60% bonus
- Diamond Elite: 100% bonus
Earn by opening co-branded credit cards
IHG currently has three co-branded credit cards — two personal and one business card. They have varying signup bonuses, annual fees, benefits, and perks. Two of the three cards are keepers in our book, particularly if you stay at an IHG property at least once per year.
Earn by opening Chase or Bilt cards
IHG is transfer partners with both Chase and Bilt, so any Chase Ultimate Rewards points or Bilt points you earn through their programs can be transferred to IHG at 1:1 ratios. These are nice for topping up or booking entire stays provided you can find a good redemption. Most in the hobby who use Chase points for hotel bookings transfer to Hyatt because the value is typically better, but there are decent opportunities at IHG.

Annual Bonuses & Big Spend Bonuses
All three IHG cards have a big spend bonus, but we don’t recommend spending to get any of them:
-
IHG One Rewards Premier:
- Spend requirement: Earn a $100 statement credit and 10,000 bonus points after spending $20,000 on the card each calendar year.
- Our take: We don’t recommend putting extra spend on the card for this perk.
-
IHG One Rewards Premier Business:
- Spend requirement: Earn a $100 statement credit and 10,000 bonus points after spending $20,000 on the card each calendar year.
- Our take: Like the personal version, it’s not worth directing spend toward this bonus.
-
IHG One Rewards Traveler:
- Spend requirement: Earn 10,000 bonus points after $10,000 in annual spend, and earn Gold Elite Status with $20,000 in annual purchases.
- Our take: We don’t recommend targeting either spend threshold just for these benefits.

How to Redeem Points
Redeem for Hotel Stays
Booking stays at IHG properties is the best use of your IHG One Rewards points. While redemptions start at 5,000 points per night at the lowest-tier properties, this is uncommon and rarely available in major cities or tourist destinations. Because IHG covers a wide range of brands, award prices can reach 150,000–200,000 points points per night.
Notes on best redemption options:
- You can transfer IHG points to airlines, but the 5:1 transfer rate offers poor value and isn’t recommended.
- Don’t expect Hyatt-level value when booking IHG properties.
- We value IHG points at 0.6¢ per point compared to Hyatt at 1.7¢ per point.
- This is why we only recommend transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards points to IHG for top ups.
- Fortunately, IHG’s co-branded credit cards offer strong signup bonuses and useful perks, making them the best way to build balances for award stays.
Cash + Points
IHG also offers a cash+points booking option on all stays. Since award prices are dynamically set, these combinations vary widely. You’re effectively “buying” points when choosing this option, so always check the math:
- If the cost per point is below 0.60¢, it may be a good deal.
- If it’s higher, booking entirely with cash or entirely with points is usually better.
