Key Takeaways

Hyatt is our favorite hotel point system.

  • The value of their points is exceptional.
  • The quality of the hotels is consistently high.
  • There’s no nickel-and-diming cardholders. As a Hyatt cardholder, you’re instantly a VIP
  • They’re a part of our top partner rewards system (Chase Ultimate Rewards) , making top offs from Chase, both easy and a good value.
  • The only downside of Hyatt is they have fewer locations than Hilton, Marriott, or IHG, so smaller or international cities may not have one.

How to Earn Points

Earning World of Hyatt points is easy thanks to its partnership with Chase, the most popular bank in the hobby. You can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards to Hyatt, and Chase also offers two co-branded World of Hyatt cards, one personal and one business. Staying at Hyatt is the other most efficient way to earn Hyatt points. There are several other ways to earn points, but they offer low value and are not worth extra effort.

Earn by staying at Hyatt

World of Hyatt members earn 5 base points per $1 spent on eligible stays at Hyatt properties. You must book directly through Hyatt, not a third-party travel site. You also earn points on qualifying room charges like dining, spa, and other on-property amenities billed to your room. You do not earn points on award stays where you redeem points for your room.

  • Discoverist: 10 percent bonus points on paid stays
  • Explorist: 20 percent bonus points on paid stays
  • Globalist: 30 percent bonus points on paid stays

Earn by opening co-branded credit cards

Hyatt has two co-branded credit cards backed by Chase, which is also a transfer partner of World of Hyatt. There is one personal card and one business card, each offering solid signup bonuses that earn Hyatt points plus various perks. We think the personal card is worth keeping long term, while the business card is better for earning the welcome offer and then canceling after a year.

Earn by opening Chase or Bilt cards

One of the reasons Chase is the most popular bank in the points and miles hobby is because of the strength of its transfer partners, with Hyatt leading the way. You can use Chase Ultimate Rewards to top off or fully book a stay at any Hyatt property. Chase offers many different cards, giving you plenty of ways to build points and transfer them to World of Hyatt.

Bilt is the only other transfer partner of World of Hyatt. If you are a renter, you should absolutely have the Bilt Mastercard so you can earn points on rent payments each month (up to 100,000 per year). Because Hyatt is a Bilt partner, you can transfer Bilt points to top off or book an entire stay.

Annual Bonuses & Big Spend Bonuses

  • World of Hyatt Personal
    • Spend requirement: Earn a second free night after spending $15,000 on your card in a calendar year.
    • Our take: This is not a good use of $15,000, in our opinion.
    • Spend requirement: Earn 2 additional Tier-Qualifying Night credits toward your next tier status every time you spend $5000 on your card.
    • Our take: Useful only if you're close to a status threshold and the extra spend aligns naturally.
  • World of Hyatt Business
    • Spend requirement: Receive 10% of the points you redeem back for the rest of the year if you spend $50,000 on the card.
    • Our take: We do not recommend spending that much solely for this perk.
    • Spend requirement: Earn 5 Tier-Qualifying Night credits toward status for every $10,000 you spend in a calendar year.
    • Our take: Not worth pursuing unless you're already very close to the next elite tier and the spending aligns naturally.

Other Options to Earn

There are a few other ways to earn Hyatt points, but only the American Airlines option stands out since there’s no spending requirement to earn extra points. If you were going to spend money with these companies anyway, earning some extra Hyatt points is a nice bonus. But we don’t recommend these as methods to actively earn Hyatt points.

  • American Airlines: American and Hyatt offer reciprocal benefits for elite status members. You can earn 1 Hyatt point per $1 spent on AA flights if you hold elite status. AA elite members also earn 1 mile per $1 spent at Hyatt. You still earn American miles when flying, making this a great way to double dip.
  • Avis: Earn 500 Hyatt points per car rental when you add your Hyatt number to your Avis account and select Hyatt as your earning preference. You will not earn Avis points on the same rental.
  • FIND Experiences: FIND is a program that offers “experiences” near Hyatt properties. You can earn 10 points per $1 spent on FIND Experiences in the U.S. and Mexico.
  • Meetings and Events: If you hold meetings or events at a Hyatt property, you can earn 1 point per $1 spent, up to 50,000 Bonus Points per event. You can also earn elite status by holding multiple events throughout the year and meeting Hyatt’s spending thresholds.

Breaking Points

How to Redeem Points

Booking stays at a Hyatt property is the best use of your points. Hyatt is the most award-friendly hotel program in the hobby. There are transfer options to airlines, but they are all terrible redemptions and should not be considered.

World of Hyatt uses an award chart for reward bookings. This is one reason the program is so popular, since the chart creates many sweet spot opportunities. Resort and destination fees are also waived when you book with points, which adds meaningful value.

Hyatt is known as the most valuable hotel program for award bookings because of its published award chart. Here are some key details about award bookings:

  • Hotels are categorized between 1 and 8, and all-inclusive resorts between A and F.
  • Pricing varies for peak vs. off-peak dates.
  • Room types include standard, club, standard suite, and premium suite.
  • The chart is updated annually around February or March, when prices often increase and hotels are recategorized.

Hyatt purchased Mr. and Mrs. Smith in 2023. These boutique properties use dynamic pricing. While the hotels can be luxurious, redemption rates are generally less valuable than those available through Hyatt’s main award chart.

Car rentals

You can both earn and spend Hyatt points for Avis car rentals. Enter your World of Hyatt number to earn points when you rent with Avis, and you can also receive 25% off base rates. You can redeem 6000 points per day for an intermediate sized car, but this is not a good value for your points.

What to Know About This Point System

Hyatt points are the most valuable hotel points available. Not only are the actual points worth more, but Hyatt is the best hotel transfer partner for Chase Ultimate Rewards. The other great thing about Hyatt points is that they can be used for all-inclusive resorts. We also love Hyatt Hotels in general. They're more universally clean with quality service, whereas many other chains are hit and miss. The drawback to Hyatt is that they don’t have hotels in many smaller cities or more exotic locations.

Hyatt cards are relatively strict on getting second cards, so make good use of your points. We would equate Hyatt Points to dollar bills, Bonvoy to fifty cent pieces, Hilton to quarters and the rest to dimes and nickels.

Status Levels Explained

Hyatt offers three levels of elite status, each with its own set of perks. To reach a status tier, you must stay a certain number of nights each year or earn a set number of base points. You can also qualify by hosting events at Hyatt properties and meeting specific spending requirements.

You can become a World of Hyatt member for free. While this is not an elite status tier, it still comes with perks worth having. Members receive discounted member rates, Brand Explorer free night awards, and, best of all, waived resort fees on award stays.

What to Know Before Canceling

You won’t lose your Hyatt points if you cancel your Hyatt card. Points do expire after 24 months of no account activity, so if you close the card, make sure you keep your account active. You can earn or redeem points, use the online point-combining request form to share points with another Hyatt member at no charge, or you can transfer points in from Chase or Bilt to reset the clock.
