Key Takeaways

Wyndham is towards the bottom of our hotel points list. It’s not a good utility point system to just hold points.

  • Questionable room quality and cleanliness.

  • Difficulty in collecting points for more than a few stays.
  • If you love a specific Wyndham hotel (including resorts), getting a card might be worth it.

How to Earn Points

There are several ways to earn Wyndham points. The easiest are by staying at Wyndham properties or opening one of their co-branded credit cards. Wyndham is also a transfer partner with Capital One and Citi, so points earned with those systems can be transferred for hotel stays.

Earn by Staying at Wyndham Properties

  • You earn points on any qualified stay at most Wyndham Hotels and Resorts.
  • Members earn 10 points per dollar spent, or 1000 points per stay, whichever is greater.
  • Exception: At WaterWalk Extended Stay, you earn 5 points per dollar in furnished suites and no points in other accommodation types.
  • There are also Status Bonuses if you hold status with Wyndham:
    • Gold: 10% bonus
    • Platinum: 15% bonus
    • Diamond: 20% bonus

Earn by Opening Co-branded Credit Cards

Wyndham has three co-branded cards from Barclays: two personal cards and one business card. You can find details on which cards we recommend below.

Annual Bonuses & Big Spend Bonuses

Wyndham Earner

  • Spend requirement: Earn 7,500 bonus points after spending $15,000 on eligible purchases in a calendar year.
  • Our recommendation: This spend requirement isn’t worth it. The Wyndham Earner Plus card gives you the same 7,500-point anniversary bonus automatically each year for a $75 annual fee, making it a far better deal than putting $15,000 of spend on this no-fee card.

Other Options to Earn

There are quite a few other ways to earn Wyndham points, but none are high-value methods. We rarely recommend spending extra time or effort on these, though some may be worth a quick look depending on your situation. See how you can earn more Wyndham Rewards here.

Breaking Points

How to Redeem Points

The most valuable way to use your Wyndham Rewards is to redeem them for stays at Wyndham properties. Wyndham keeps things simple with three award tiers: 7500, 15,000, or 30,000 points per night. If you hold a Wyndham Earner card, you’ll receive a 10% discount on all award stays, bringing redemptions down to 6750, 13,500, or 27,000 points. More than half of their properties fall into the lowest tier, including a few all-inclusive resorts.

You can also stretch your points further with a points+cash “Go Fast” redemption, which allows you to pay part of the rate in cash and part in points.

What to Know About This Point System

Wyndham may not be Mr. Popular during lunch period, but its subtle redemption program holds a mysterious appeal. Earn points through the Wyndham Visa cards, which are both very simple to understand, options include a 15,000 or a 30,000 welcome bonus, using your cards to get gas, pay utility or buy groceries gets you 2x point per $1 on both cards and with the annual fee card you get extra, thank you anniversary points every year. As for transferring, thankfully Capital One has added them in with a transfer rate of 2:1.5, as a nice option if you're short on points. Redemption time is as simple as 1, 2, 3, because those are the tiers, hotels at 7,500, 15,000 or 30,000 points. Also, look into a discounted “go fast” night where you can book a room for low points + cash, this option generously stretches your points and caters entirely to us, the customers. Wyndham offers over 9,000 hotels worldwide, including all-inclusive vacation club resorts and vacation rentals all bookable with points, so while it’s sometimes disregarded, we think Wyndham rewards has definitely grown into a very attractive option.

Status Levels Explained

There are four levels of elite status with Wyndham Rewards. Blue is the entry tier you receive for signing up. Benefits include:

  • Earn at least 1,000 points per stay
  • Access to free and discounted nights
  • Rollover nights that never expire
  • Free Wi-Fi

All higher tiers must be earned by completing a required number of qualifying nights or by opening one of Wyndham’s co-branded credit cards.

What to Know Before Canceling

Even if you hold one of the two Wyndham cards with an annual fee, you can still get solid value as long as you stay at a Wyndham property at least once per year. The anniversary points and complimentary status on the Earner Plus and Business cards generally justify their $75 and $95 annual fees. Regardless of whether you keep a card, your points will expire three years after they are earned. You will also forfeit your points if you have no account activity for 18 months.
